Reservoirs can be natural or man-made and are used to store large volumes of water, while storage tanks are typically used for smaller quantities and are often located near distribution systems.

  5. Distribution Systems: This network of pipes, valves, and hydrants delivers water from storage facilities to end users. The distribution system must be designed to handle peak demand, maintain water pressure, and ensure water quality throughout the network.

  6. Metering Devices: These are used to measure the volume of water delivered to consumers, allowing for billing and monitoring of usage. Meters can be manual or automated and are an essential part of managing and conserving water resources.

Treatment Works for Reclaimed Water: For water that is to be reused, such as in irrigation or industrial processes, additional treatment works may be necessary to meet the quality standards for reuse. This can include advanced treatment processes like reverse osmosis, ultraviolet disinfection, or other specialized technologies.

  8. Wastewater Collection and Treatment: After water has been used, it becomes wastewater, which must be collected and treated before being discharged back into the environment. This involves sewer systems, lift stations, and wastewater treatment plants that use processes like primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment to remove contaminants and pathogens.
